How to propagate zz plant

The part most guides skip: ZZ leaf cuttings must first grow a rhizome — a small potato-like tuber — before they produce any leaf at all. That takes months, and nothing visible happens above the soil the entire time. Most people conclude it failed and throw it out while it is quietly working.

Step by step

Fastest route: unpot and separate the rhizomes, keeping roots with each piece.
For leaf cuttings: pull whole leaflets off with a bit of the base attached.
Set them a half-inch deep in gritty mix.
Water very sparingly and wait. A rhizome forms first, then a shoot — three to nine months.
