How to propagate aloe vera

Offsets (pups) only · easy — but only one method works · 2–3 weeks to callus, 4–8 to establish

The part most guides skip: ⚠️ Aloe leaf cuttings do not work. This is the single most attempted and most disappointing propagation in the hobby — an aloe leaf is mostly water and lacks the tissue needed to form a new growing point, so it shrivels or rots instead of rooting. Jade leaves root; aloe leaves do not. Propagate from pups at the base instead.

Step by step

  1. Look for pups — small offsets pushing up around the base of the parent.
  2. Slide the whole plant out of its pot so you can see where each pup attaches.
  3. Separate a pup that is roughly a fifth the size of the parent and has roots of its own, teasing it free by hand where possible rather than cutting.
  4. If you must cut, let the cut surface dry two to three days until it callouses.
  5. Pot into dry gritty mix and do not water for about a week.
  6. Water sparingly thereafter; it establishes over four to eight weeks.

Water or soil?

Soil, always. Aloe in water rots — there is no water-propagation route for this plant, despite how often it is suggested.

Why cuttings fail

Tried a leaf cutting

It will not root. Take a pup instead. This is the reason most aloe propagation "fails".

Pup taken with no roots

A rootless pup can work but is far slower and riskier. Wait until it has its own roots.

Watered immediately

Let cut surfaces callus and stay dry about a week first.

What actually helps

A parent that never produces pups is usually under-lit or over-potted. Aloe offsets when it is getting good light and is slightly snug.

Ready to pot your cutting up?

Once roots reach one to two inches, it needs the right mix — not the same as the parent plant's, because a rooted cutting has almost no root mass to draw water down.

Questions

How long does it take to propagate aloe vera?

2–3 weeks to callus, 4–8 to establish. Bright indirect light and warmth both speed it up.

Water or soil — which is better for aloe vera?

Soil, always. Aloe in water rots — there is no water-propagation route for this plant, despite how often it is suggested.

Why is my aloe vera cutting not rooting?

Tried a leaf cutting: It will not root. Take a pup instead. This is the reason most aloe propagation "fails". Pup taken with no roots: A rootless pup can work but is far slower and riskier. Wait until it has its own roots. Watered immediately: Let cut surfaces callus and stay dry about a week first.

When is the best time to propagate?

Spring and early summer, while the plant is actively growing. What matters is day length rather than the date — below roughly 11 hours of daylight most houseplants idle, and cuttings taken then root slowly if at all.

Do I need rooting hormone?

Not for aloe vera. Rooting hormone helps with woody, difficult cuttings; the common houseplants root readily without it. Clean tools and the right cutting matter far more.
