How to propagate hoya

Stem cuttings at a node · moderate · 4–8 weeks to roots

The part most guides skip: Never cut off the flower spur. Hoyas rebloom from the same bare peduncle year after year, and removing it — because it looks like a dead twig — costs you that bloom point permanently. Take propagation cuttings from vine tips, not from anything flowering.

Step by step

  1. Take a cutting with two or three leaves and at least one node.
  2. Strip the lowest leaves to expose the node.
  3. Let the cut end dry for an hour — hoyas are semi-succulent and rot if placed wet.
  4. Root in water, damp sphagnum, or perlite. Warmth helps considerably.
  5. Roots in four to eight weeks.

Water or soil?

Damp sphagnum moss or straight perlite works better than either extreme — enough moisture to root, enough air to avoid rot. Hoyas are the species where this middle route genuinely outperforms.

Why cuttings fail

Cutting rotted

Let it dry an hour first, and avoid deep water — only the node needs contact.

Cut off the peduncle

Not recoverable. Leave every bare flower stalk alone; that is where next year’s blooms come from.

Too cold

Hoyas root slowly below about 70°F. Warmth is the biggest accelerator.

What actually helps

A rooted hoya cutting can take years to flower. Buying a mature plant is the shortcut if blooms are the goal.

Ready to pot your cutting up?

Once roots reach one to two inches, it needs the right mix — not the same as the parent plant's, because a rooted cutting has almost no root mass to draw water down.

Questions

How long does it take to propagate hoya?

4–8 weeks to roots. Bright indirect light and warmth both speed it up.

Water or soil — which is better for hoya?

Damp sphagnum moss or straight perlite works better than either extreme — enough moisture to root, enough air to avoid rot. Hoyas are the species where this middle route genuinely outperforms.

Why is my hoya cutting not rooting?

Cutting rotted: Let it dry an hour first, and avoid deep water — only the node needs contact. Cut off the peduncle: Not recoverable. Leave every bare flower stalk alone; that is where next year’s blooms come from. Too cold: Hoyas root slowly below about 70°F. Warmth is the biggest accelerator.

When is the best time to propagate?

Spring and early summer, while the plant is actively growing. What matters is day length rather than the date — below roughly 11 hours of daylight most houseplants idle, and cuttings taken then root slowly if at all.

Do I need rooting hormone?

Not for hoya. Rooting hormone helps with woody, difficult cuttings; the common houseplants root readily without it. Clean tools and the right cutting matter far more.
