How to propagate string of pearls
Strand cuttings laid on the soil surface · very easy · 2–4 weeks to root
Step by step
- Cut a strand three to five inches long.
- Pinch off the pearls from the last inch or so, exposing bare nodes.
- Lay the strand flat on damp gritty mix, coiling it if it is long. Press it lightly so nodes touch the surface.
- Optionally pin it down with a bent paperclip to keep contact.
- Mist lightly every few days rather than soaking. Roots in two to four weeks.
Water or soil?
Soil, and only just damp. String of pearls is a succulent — a strand sitting in water turns to mush within days.
Why cuttings fail
Too wet. Mist rather than water, and use gritty mix that dries fast.
It works, but slowly and from one point. Laying it flat roots it from every node.
Ambiguous on this plant — it means the roots are not delivering water, from either drought OR rot. Check the mix before adding more water.
What actually helps
Lay six or eight strands across the surface of the pot you want to fill. This is how nurseries get that dense curtain — not from one cutting growing long.

Ready to pot your cutting up?
Once roots reach one to two inches, it needs the right mix — not the same as the parent plant's, because a rooted cutting has almost no root mass to draw water down.
Questions
How long does it take to propagate string of pearls?
2–4 weeks to root. Bright indirect light and warmth both speed it up.
Water or soil — which is better for string of pearls?
Soil, and only just damp. String of pearls is a succulent — a strand sitting in water turns to mush within days.
Why is my string of pearls cutting not rooting?
Strand went mushy: Too wet. Mist rather than water, and use gritty mix that dries fast. Buried the end vertically: It works, but slowly and from one point. Laying it flat roots it from every node. Pearls shrivelled: Ambiguous on this plant — it means the roots are not delivering water, from either drought OR rot. Check the mix before adding more water.
When is the best time to propagate?
Spring and early summer, while the plant is actively growing. What matters is day length rather than the date — below roughly 11 hours of daylight most houseplants idle, and cuttings taken then root slowly if at all.
Do I need rooting hormone?
Not for string of pearls. Rooting hormone helps with woody, difficult cuttings; the common houseplants root readily without it. Clean tools and the right cutting matter far more.
