How to propagate jade plant

Leaf or stem cuttings — callus first · easy but slow · 2–3 weeks to callus, 4–8 to root

The part most guides skip: Let the cut surface dry and callus before it touches soil or water. This is the opposite of the rule for vining plants, and it is the whole game with succulents: a fresh wet cut placed straight into damp soil rots almost every time.

Step by step

  1. Twist off a whole healthy leaf, or cut a stem section with a clean blade.
  2. Set it somewhere dry and out of direct sun for two to three days until the cut end looks dry and sealed.
  3. Lay leaves on top of dry gritty mix, or set stem cuttings shallowly into it.
  4. Do NOT water yet. Wait about a week, then mist lightly every few days.
  5. Roots and a tiny new rosette form over four to eight weeks.

Water or soil?

Soil only. Jade cuttings placed in water almost always rot — this is one plant where the water method genuinely does not apply.

Why cuttings fail

Cutting rotted

Almost always skipping the callus step, or watering too early.

Leaf shrivelled with no roots

Normal for a while — the leaf is feeding the new growth. Keep waiting; mist lightly rather than soaking.

What actually helps

Take several leaves at once. Success is high but not universal, and leaves cost the parent plant nothing.

Ready to pot your cutting up?

Once roots reach one to two inches, it needs the right mix — not the same as the parent plant's, because a rooted cutting has almost no root mass to draw water down.

Questions

How long does it take to propagate jade plant?

2–3 weeks to callus, 4–8 to root. Do not judge it early — this species is genuinely slow and looks like failure long before it is.

Water or soil — which is better for jade plant?

Soil only. Jade cuttings placed in water almost always rot — this is one plant where the water method genuinely does not apply.

Why is my jade plant cutting not rooting?

Cutting rotted: Almost always skipping the callus step, or watering too early. Leaf shrivelled with no roots: Normal for a while — the leaf is feeding the new growth. Keep waiting; mist lightly rather than soaking.

When is the best time to propagate?

Spring and early summer, while the plant is actively growing. What matters is day length rather than the date — below roughly 11 hours of daylight most houseplants idle, and cuttings taken then root slowly if at all.

Do I need rooting hormone?

Not for jade plant. Rooting hormone helps with woody, difficult cuttings; the common houseplants root readily without it. Clean tools and the right cutting matter far more.
