How often should you water a ZZ plant?

About every 21 days while it is growing and every 40 days when it is not — but treat those as the starting point for a check, not a schedule to keep. What decides it is whether the soil is dry all the way through — not just the surface.

Why a number alone gets plants killed

Every guide answers this with a fixed interval, and every fixed interval is wrong somewhere. The same ZZ plant in a small terracotta pot on a bright windowsill can want water twice as often as one in a big plastic pot in a dim corner. Watering to the calendar is the most common way a collection drowns — the plant is not on your schedule, and it does not care what day it is.

Four things move the real interval, and this is roughly how far each moves it:

The check, for this species

It stores water in underground rhizomes. Treat it like a succulent: soak, then forget it for weeks.

Push a finger in rather than judging by the surface — the top of the soil dries first and tells you almost nothing about the rootball underneath. For a ZZ plant you are looking for dry all the way through — not just the surface. If it is not there yet, wait and check again; that is not neglect, it is the correct answer.

When you get it wrong

Yellowing stalks that go soft at the base mean the rhizomes are rotting — unpot and check before doing anything else.

The interval is a starting point. Your pot is the answer.

Plantroster tracks what each of your pots actually does — season, the forecast where you live, and whether the soil was still damp last time you checked — and tells you when to check this one, not when to water it.
