How much light does a spider plant need?

A spider plant does best in bright indirect light. It will survive in medium, and on direct sun: morning sun fine; hot afternoon sun bleaches.

What those words actually mean in a room

"Bright indirect" is the most misused phrase in houseplant care, so here is the plain version. The test that matters is not how bright the room feels — your eyes adjust and a plant's leaves do not — it is how much sky the plant can see from where it sits.

Reading the plant instead

Brown tips are the signature fluoride burn of this species. It is a water-quality problem, not a humidity problem.

Light also decides how often this plant drinks — the same spider plant in brighter light dries out faster and wants water sooner. If you are moving it, expect the watering interval to move with it: how often to water a spider plant.

The interval is a starting point. Your pot is the answer.

Plantroster tracks what each of your pots actually does — season, the forecast where you live, and whether the soil was still damp last time you checked — and tells you when to check this one, not when to water it.
