How often should you water a money tree?

About every 8 days while it is growing and every 16 days when it is not — but treat those as the starting point for a check, not a schedule to keep. What decides it is whether the soil is the top 2" dry.

Why a number alone gets plants killed

Every guide answers this with a fixed interval, and every fixed interval is wrong somewhere. The same money tree in a small terracotta pot on a bright windowsill can want water twice as often as one in a big plastic pot in a dim corner. Watering to the calendar is the most common way a collection drowns — the plant is not on your schedule, and it does not care what day it is.

Four things move the real interval, and this is roughly how far each moves it:

The check, for this species

Water thoroughly, then let the top 2" dry. Despite the "aquatica" name, in a pot it will not tolerate standing water.

Push a finger in rather than judging by the surface — the top of the soil dries first and tells you almost nothing about the rootball underneath. For a money tree you are looking for the top 2" dry. If it is not there yet, wait and check again; that is not neglect, it is the correct answer.

When you get it wrong

Yellow lower leaves that drop are the classic overwatering signal — far more common than underwatering.

The interval is a starting point. Your pot is the answer.

Plantroster tracks what each of your pots actually does — season, the forecast where you live, and whether the soil was still damp last time you checked — and tells you when to check this one, not when to water it.
