Is Peace Lily toxic to cats?
Peace lily (Spathiphyllum wallisii) is toxic to cats. The agent is insoluble calcium oxalates.

Signs that need a vet the same day whatever the plant: repeated vomiting, drooling that will not stop, swelling of the mouth or face, trouble breathing or swallowing, collapse, or a seizure.
What it does, and why
Peace lily contains insoluble calcium oxalates. These are microscopic needle-shaped crystals held under pressure in the leaf. Biting releases them into the mouth and throat, where they cause immediate mechanical injury — this is a physical burn, not a poison absorbed into the bloodstream, which is why it hurts instantly and why it rarely goes further than the mouth.
Signs to watch for
Oral irritation, intense burning of the mouth, tongue and lips, drooling, vomiting, difficulty swallowing.
Important: a peace lily is NOT a true lily. True lilies (Lilium, Hemerocallis) cause acute kidney failure in cats and are a genuine emergency. A peace lily is a painful mouth irritant, not a kidney toxin — still call, but the two are not the same danger.
How likely is it, really
Most cases are a chewed leaf rather than a meal. Calcium-oxalate plants punish the first bite — the burning is immediate, so animals usually stop straight away, and that self-limiting quality is why serious poisonings are rare. The exception is a young or determined animal that keeps going despite the pain.
Keeping the plant anyway
Height alone does not work with a cat — a cat treats a high shelf as a destination. What actually helps: a room the cat does not have unsupervised access to, a hanging position with no adjacent launch point, and clearing fallen leaves the same day, since a dropped leaf on the floor is the usual culprit. A pot of cat grass elsewhere in the room redirects the urge to chew far better than deterrent sprays do.
Is it toxic to people?
Yes, mildly. The same compound irritates human mouths and skin, so it is worth keeping Peace lily out of reach of a toddler and washing your hands after pruning. Serious harm to an adult is very unlikely.
