Tap water is why your leaf tips are brown

Almost every guide blames low humidity. For a specific and predictable group of houseplants, the real cause is dissolved fluoride and salts in ordinary tap water — and misting will never fix it.

Which plants are actually sensitive

This is not a universal problem. Most houseplants handle tap water without complaint. But these species are measurably sensitive, and on them brown tips are a water-quality symptom until proven otherwise:

What the damage looks like

Fluoride and salt burn the signature

How to tell: Crisp brown tips, often with a thin yellow halo where the brown meets the green. It accumulates slowly over months, shows on the oldest leaves first, and keeps appearing on new growth no matter how carefully you water. Frequently there is a white or yellowish crust on the soil surface or around the drainage hole.

What to do: Flush the pot for two to three minutes to leach out accumulated salts, then switch to distilled water, reverse-osmosis water, or collected rainwater. Judge the fix on whether NEW leaves come in clean — existing brown tips never turn green again.

Why this gets misdiagnosed so often. Dry air and fluoride burn produce similar-looking damage, and dry air is the answer everyone reaches for first. The distinction: genuinely dry air crisps whole leaf edges and affects humidity-loving species broadly, while fluoride burn concentrates at the tips and shows up specifically on the sensitive list above. If you have already raised humidity and new leaves still come in browned, water is what is left.

Does a Brita or filter pitcher remove fluoride?

No. Standard activated-carbon filter pitchers are designed to improve taste and reduce chlorine. They do not meaningfully remove fluoride. Distilled water, reverse-osmosis water, and collected rainwater do.

Does letting tap water sit out overnight help?

Only for chlorine, which does off-gas. Fluoride is a dissolved salt and does not evaporate — leaving water out overnight concentrates it very slightly as water evaporates. It is the most repeated piece of plant advice that does not do what people think.

Which plants actually care?

Most houseplants tolerate tap water fine. The genuinely sensitive ones are corn plant, madagascar dragon tree, calathea, spider plant, peace lily, parlor palm, areca palm. If you do not own one of those, your brown tips are probably something else.

How do I flush a pot?

Take the plant to a sink or outside, and run water slowly through the soil for two to three minutes, letting it drain freely the whole time. This dissolves and carries away accumulated salts. Do it before switching water sources, or the old salts stay put.

Is rainwater safe to collect for plants?

Yes, and it is what these species evolved with. Collect it away from roofs treated with moss killer, keep it covered to limit mosquitoes, and use it within a few weeks.

Municipal water varies. If you want certainty about your own supply, your water utility publishes an annual quality report that lists fluoride levels.
