Is Snake Plant toxic to dogs?
Snake plant (Dracaena trifasciata) is toxic to dogs. The agent is saponins.
ASPCA Animal Poison Control, 24 hours: (888) 426-4435 (a consultation fee may apply), or call your own vet. Take a piece of the plant with you.
Signs that need a vet the same day whatever the plant: repeated vomiting, drooling that will not stop, swelling of the mouth or face, trouble breathing or swallowing, collapse, or a seizure.
What it does, and why
Snake plant contains saponins. Saponins are soap-like compounds that irritate the gut lining. The result is stomach upset rather than organ damage, and it usually resolves once the plant material is out.
Signs to watch for
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea.
How likely is it, really
Most cases are a chewed leaf rather than a meal. The dose matters: a nibble and a swallowed stem are different events. Volume, and how long ago, are the two things the vet will ask.
Keeping the plant anyway
Height alone does not work with a dog. What actually helps: a room the dog does not have unsupervised access to, a hanging position with no adjacent launch point, and clearing fallen leaves the same day, since a dropped leaf on the floor is the usual culprit. Dogs chew from boredom more than appetite — the fix is usually enrichment, not the plant.
Is it toxic to people?
Yes, mildly. The same compound irritates human mouths and skin, so it is worth keeping Snake plant out of reach of a toddler and washing your hands after pruning. Serious harm to an adult is very unlikely.
